Renew: 2015’s Color of the Year

I am so excited to incorporate Pantone’s 2015 color of the year, Marsala, into my wardrobe. Marsala is a rich, earthy wine red that adds warmth and luxury to outfits, makeup, and even interior décor. Although Marsala can be a statement color all on its own, it can also accent and compliment other colors like blue or gold hues.

What I really love about Pantone’s 2015 color of the year is that it compliments many skin tones. Like most people, my skin tone changes throughout the year. I tend to be a lot lighter in the winter months and tan super easily during the summer months. Having a color in my wardrobe that can adapt to my changing skin tone is definitely a closet must-have for me. Below are a few outfit sets I’ve created using Marasala’s deep and glamorous color. Rejuvenate: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

The holiday season is finally over and it’s time to go back to university (although I’m far from ready.) After spending a week in Florida with my family, I feel refreshed. I wasn’t able to document my whole trip, but I was able to snap a few shots at the dock behind my hotel.

When I travel, my main objective is to be comfortable. For the humid and hot weather in Florida, I packed a lot of dresses and a few light perforated cardigans. I strayed away from jeans to avoid feeling constricted and sweaty, but received a couple of bug bites from not covering my legs (which were super itchy.)

Arizona Birkenstocks were my go to sandal for the entire trip. Birks are extremely comfortable and durable. The pair I have are dark brown with copper colored buckles (an alternative neutral to black or white.) Wearing Birks 24/7, however, leaves you with an awkward tan. You also can’t get these sandals wet, so I don’t recommend them for walking on the beach.

For one of my outfits in Florida, I wore a yellow dress from Urban Outfitters. Although I’m not a huge fan of yellow, I love the bright color of this dress against my skin tone. The cutout details in the back also kept me nice and cool. To cover up, I wore a long cardigan from Nordstrom. The length of the cardigan balanced out the shortness of the dress and made me feel a little more modest.

I’m definitely going to miss being a 5-minute walk away from the beach (and the time spent with my family), but it’s time to go back to L.A.

Reimagine Sequins for the Holidays

Tis the season for holiday parties and what better way to feel festive than sequins. All sequin dresses can be a little daunting for some, but these dresses are a great piece of clothing to have in your closet. You can highlight the bold fabric with different textures like a fur jacket or even softened up the outfit with a moto jacket or a solid colored cardigan.

Whether it be for a Christmas party or a New Years Eve gathering, try out a sequin dress and be ready to feel super glammed up. Need a little bit of holiday outfit inspiration? Take a look at the outfit sets below that I’ve created.

Revamp Your Outfits With A Statement Necklace

I’ve always been a fan of accessorizing my outfits. I love delicate necklaces and dainty rings, but sometimes I like to grab more edgy accessories to revamp my look.

My current obsession is a chunky cluster necklace from Target (on sale for $8!). This necklace is almost identical to the sold out Zara Stones and Flowers necklace.

The crystal flowers and chandelier pieces are translucent, so you won’t have to worry about clashing with silver or gold accessories. Not only is this necklace a bold statement piece, but Jenn Im of ClothesEncounters also rocked a similar necklace in her Edgy Fall Outfits video (for all you Jenn fans out there).

Refuel: A Food Binge Essential

A t-shirt dress is the perfect clothing piece for food adventures especially if you’re planning to eat a lot of food. This type of dress flows away from the body hiding a potential food baby. The t-shirt dress is also a great dress once the food coma hits. Unlike a pair of jeans, this dress does not restrict or cling to the body whatsoever.

T-shirt dresses are exactly what you think they are: oversized tees. But thanks to stores like Topshop, Urban Outfitters, H&M and much more, these “oversized tees” are more refined than throwing on a men’s XL shirt.

A huge chair perfect for pictures @ the Anaheim Packing District!

T-shirt dresses are made out of soft and breathable fabric like cotton or jersey. These types of dresses can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. But rest assured, they are unbelievably comfy.

Outside of the Anaheim Packing District

With the day off from school, I decided to sport my new t-shirt dress on a food adventure with friends to the Anaheim Packing District. For those of you who have not yet been to the Anaheim Packing District in Anaheim, let me tell you, it is freaking amazing (especially for foodies!). The Packing District is one huge warehouse (two stories high) filled with different food stalls. It has a plethora of cuisine ranging from fancy grilled cheese to Canadian poutine and everything in between. Besides the yummy food, the Packing District is visually beautiful, decorated with a modern yet rustic touch.

It was so hard not to go around every food stall and buy at least one item to taste (it is a bit pricey). After taking multiple walks up and down the Packing District, I finally decided to try the Tonkotsu ramen from Orange TEI. I’ve had ramen multiple times before and this bowl would definitely make it on my top five. The broth was rich, the noodles were firm, and the pork was tender.

A bowl of delicious Tonkotsu ramen.

For my outfit I wore my striped t-shirt dress from Cotton On that I bought on sale for $5 dollars. What I really love about this particular t-shirt dress is the slightly hemmed sleeves that enhance the silhouette. The striped print and color of this dress also made it a must-have for me. Since I wanted to add a little more structure to my outfit, I decided to throw on my thrifted distressed denim jacket. I also added my cutout boots from Topshop to balance out the casual aspects of the look.

Repeat: One Shirt, Three Ways

A basic t-shirt can be found in almost anyone’s wardrobe. But if you are searching for a not-so-basic, basic tee, then Wilfred’s Capucine t-shirt from Aritzia is the shirt for you.

Established in Canada, Aritzia is a chic, sophisticated, and modern boutique. The shop showcases about 14 different brands and has more than 60 stores in North America (but you can always check out their website here). The Wilfred brand is inspired by a blend of vintage luxury and effortless fashion, making this $50 Capucine tee a quintessential closet grabber.

Yes, it is $50 for a t-shirt, but it is the comfiest and most versatile tee in the whole entire fashion universe. If I could, and if my wallet allowed, I would buy this tee in every color available. Thankfully, my eldest sister let me borrow her Wilfred tee until I can eventually add one to my own wardrobe essentials. Unlike your basic top, the Capucine tee has a rounded hi-lo hem with two long slits on each side. The silhouette of the shirt drapes nicely on the body and shows just the right amount of skin. Made out of ultra luxe jersey fabric, it is outrageously soft and cozy.

Splurging on one item can be tough on your wallet. However, you will be able to wear this top multiple ways.

Denim: I like to pair this tee with distressed boyfriend jeans and sneakers for a minimalistic look. Since the outfit lacks color, I chose to incorporate my ombre pink Roshe Runs from Nordstrom. This outfit is all about comfort and highlighting the shape of the Capucine top.

Screen Shot 2014-10-24 at 2.51.19 AMPC: Michaela Tee – Edits: Jeline Abutin

Dresses: This t-shirt can also be styled without slipping on a pair of jeans. Throw it over a dress and add your favorite backpack or even a cute Panama hat. The slit sides and rounded hem add a different structure to the dress. The shirt is also fitted enough at the top so excessive bagginess is not a factor.

Layers: Live somewhere with colder weather? Add some layers to this tee. For those of you who love to layer, this t-shirt is the perfect base. Since the tee is quite thin, it doesn’t feel bulky under chunky knits. This lets you layer sweaters, cardigans, or jackets without feeling constricted. Plus, the rounded hi-lo hem still peeks through!

Still not ready to spend $50 on Wilfred’s Capucine tee? You can get a similar t-shirt from Nordstrom here for $28.

Relax: Comfy Outfit Ideas

When it comes to picking out my #OOTD (outfit of the day), comfort has become one of my top priorities. As a college student, I aim to wear pieces that look and feel good. But as a college student, I need for my outfits to have the functionality to withstand short naps in the library (or any place you can squeeze in a little sleep), a daily commute, and the obnoxiously long walk from class back to the parking lot.

I also lean toward breathable fabrics, like linen, to stay cool and comfy in the hot SoCal weather. Cotton or jersey are alternative fabrics that feel great on the body as well and feel just like lounge-wear. For footwear, I gravitate toward sneakers for a city look or even boots with a low heel for a more uptown look. Being comfortable doesn’t mean the visual aesthetics of an outfit have to disappear. Mix your comfort needs and personal style and get outfits that you can relax and feel confident in. Need ideas?
